Secrets To Steal From The Red Carpet

With the Golden Globe Awards right around the corner, there’s no better time to become an expert at perfecting your evening look, agreed? Today, we’re talking Hollywood glamour with Team Zoe fave (and dear friend) Charlotte Tilbury. Her reputation as a sought-out makeup artist of A-listers and award ceremony frequenters makes her the ideal candidate to dish out a batch of best-kept beauty secrets for prepping, priming and extending a gorgeous complexion fit for a red carpet debut.

Charlotte Tilbury's Tips

Prep Your Skin

Clarisonic Mia, $125, Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, $96, Sarah Chapman Ultimate Cleanse, $75

"I begin by cleansing the skin. Before an event I encourage a facial routine to excavate any pores and smooth the skin’s surface ready for makeup. The day of application is not the day for intensive cleansing as it aggravates the skin. A few hours before, I will use a Clarisonic combined with a little of Sarah Chapman’s Ultimate Cleanse to buff the skin of any dry skin cells. I follow by flooding the complexion with moisture by applying some of my fabulously nourishing Magic Cream."

Create A Flawless Base

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, $45

"I start by prepping the skin with my magic cream. I then use a lightweight liquid foundation to provide an illuminating canvas for makeup. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua is perfect for a flawless, natural finish. Powder is key to sealing a flawless base. Use it on the T-Zone area, the forehead, down the nose and on the chin. I like to leave the cheekbones free of powder so that they really catch the light of the cameras on the red carpet."

You want a powder that isn’t too light reflecting. You have to be careful when using HD powders as camera flashes can make it stand out on the face and draw attention to areas where it has been used.

The Best Bronzer

Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Gold Dust, $95

"Next, I contour with a bronzer. Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Gold Dust leaves the skin warm and golden, like that perfect Mediterranean tan. I use a big bronzing brush to sweep the product over areas where the sun would naturally fall."

Make It Last

Yes To Carrots Moisturizer, $15, Nars Lip Liner, $22, Hourglass Primer, $72

"You need an enduring primer and a non-shiny, deeply nourishing moisturizer. This protects the skin and ensures that the makeup stays on infallibly. A good powder acts as a sealant and keeps everything from becoming skewed after hours. Lip-liner acts as a stencil for your lipstick colour – seal with powder if it is a matte look. Otherwise, a beautiful, high-shine, long-lasting gloss can be your all night secret weapon!"

Don't Forget Your Falsies

Make Up For Ever Individual Eyelashes, $16

"I always pop some individual lashes in the corner of the eye to elongate, accentuate and thicken the look of the eye and lash. Don’t overload your eye with a full set you want your natural beauty to shine through."

Make sure you have the correct shade of foundation and be extra careful when using HD powder to avoid the dreaded powder-panda eyes.

Her Fave Red Carpet Look

Hulton Archive

Audrey Hepburn at The Oscars, 1953

"I absolutely adore Audrey Hepburn’s look from the Oscars in 1953. Those particular and sharply shaped eyebrows – just a shade darker than normal, underneath that distinctive pixie cut. There is something ethereal about her porcelain skin against the lace high neck dress that she was wearing. It’s just perfection… "

Evening Staples

Laura Mercier Setting Powder, $32, Guerlain Lipstick, $36

"Powder is demattifying and relieves any unwanted panic-driven sweat! Lipstick and liner make a glossy top up duo, just be mindful of your teeth! Concealer and bronzer allow you to sculpt and contour midway through the evening. Lastly, you can never have enough mascara–this is perfect for lifting and opening your eyes in the morning. You never know who’s afterparty you might find yourself at!"
