Lucky Magazine’s Laurel Pantin Shares Her Beauty Rules

It’s not every day we find a fashion insider who has killer style (think daring head-to-toe neutrals) and makes us laugh out loud via email. That is, until we came upon Lucky’s style editor, Laurel Pantin. Much like her supercool and just a little bit quirky personality, Laurel’s beauty routine is delightfully no-frills, yet affective. Here, the products the blonde beauty swears get her through Fashion Week unscathed and the rest of the year looking fabulous.

Rule #1: A Little Goes A Long Way

"My beauty M.O. in 3 words: Just do less."

Rule #2: Care For Your Hair

"My hair is weird because it's really curly, and there's a lot of it, but it's really fine. If I don't put anything in it, it's like a fluffy cloud—like a baby chicken. Purely Perfect makes it all hold together a little better. I also still swear by John Frieda Frizz Ease serum. It's the best."

Rule #3: Know Your Color Theory

"Part of my 'do nothing' campaign includes neglecting to get my highlights touched up and instead trying to get the same results with Sun-In. It does not work! If I'm really trying to look my best, I'll go see Rachel Bodt at Cutler for color. She's amazing—no matter what horrible thing I do to my color, she can always fix it. She's also the nicest person ever."

Rule #4: Be Strict About Skincare

"The one thing I do handle religiously is skincare. I like to use the Dr. Jart Pore Medic cleanser, then Benefit Dream Screen SPF (it really has an amazing texture), followed by a little bit of La Prairie tinted moisturizer, which I've been using for years—it makes my skin look more alive. If you're not going to wear makeup your skin has to look really good."

Rule #5: Borrow From The Boys

"One of my little pleasures in life is the family of Axe products. I love the way Axe smells, and I use the body wash, shampoo, deodorant and also the body spray. I wish they made a scented body lotion. The smell makes me feel happy and yummy and kind of energized so hopefully I'll float through NYFW on a cloud of boy-scented happiness."

Rule #6: Fashion Week Makeup Hero Kit

"If I am going to wear makeup, I either like everything to be very matte, or I like glitter. I love Nars' Marre Multiple in Vientiane as a bronzer. I hate bronzer with shimmer and this stuff is so creamy, it's like clay. I also really like Mac's Haute and Naughty mascara. It makes my eyelashes look super long and fluffy, and it doesn't flake off. When I really go for it, I wear a little Make Up For Ever loose glitter around my eyes in silver or gold."

Rule #7: Glitter Is Always A Good Idea

"In general I'm really into doing as little as possible in terms of beauty and personal maintenance. I haven't had my eyebrows done in years, and I went months without getting a manicure. Then I went to Paintbox in Soho and got a full glitter gel manicure, and now I'm fully back on the nail polish train. I love paintbox. I'll probably get my glitter nails refreshed for NYFW this year."

Rule #8: Know What Works For You

"The other beauty product I can't live without is VMV Hypoallergenics Boo Boo Balm. I'm allergic to beeswax so lip balms are problematic for me. I use this stuff to keep my lips moisturized but I also put it on my cuticles, elbows, knees—wherever. It's naturally anti-bacterial, which is great if you cut or burn yourself. I also use it on my eyelids and cheekbones as a highlighter. It's like a more natural, silkier Vaseline. I feel crazy if I don't have any on me."

Rule #9: Keep It Moving

"I have to exercise regularly or I'll start to feel really sad and weird. I train once a week at Soho Strength Lab with Albert Matheny, and I also go to lots of classes at Equinox and ModelFit. I'm really going to try and keep up that habit because the last thing I want to feel during Fashion Week is sad or weird."

Rule #10: Trust French Chicks For Style Inspo

"My Fashion Week beauty icon is Caroline de Maigret because she's such a babe and looks like she has way more interesting things to do than her hair or makeup. She nails effortless."
