How To Rock A Turban This Summer

by Megan Gustashaw

Instead of relying on a messy topknot or ponytail at the beach or pool this summer try a not-too-perfect side braid finished with a glamorous turban headband for a fresh look. Today Sophie Elkus of AngelFoodStyle and Joico hair stylist Eric Mayes show you how to get the hairstyle in a few easy steps. Just add a bikini, white separates and chic sandals and you’ll be ready to hit the sand!

You'll Need

Step 1: Prep Hair And Create Sections

Start with straight, freshly brushed hair. Create a deep side part that’s 2 to 3 inches long then comb the rest of hair straight back. Give hair some grip and fullness by spraying Instant Refresh dry shampoo through the mid-shaft and ends. Then, create three sections of hair aligned with the part as shown.

Step 2: Braid Hair

Begin a traditional three-strand braid, ensuring that hair is positioned to one side, so that it sits comfortably once complete.

Step 3: Secure Braid

Braid until you’re about 3 inches from the ends and secure with a clear hair elastic. If a few shorter layers begin to poke out of the braid, that’s okay. The finished look is meant to be a bit messy so flyaway pieces are welcome.

Step 4: Protect Against Humidity

While the length of the braid should be a bit messy, you’ll want to keep hair around the crown smooth and relatively secure. To achieve this, spray Humidity Blocker finishing spray along part and top of hair, smoothing hair with your hands as you go.

Step 5: Loosen Braid

Using fingers, loosen the loops of the braid slightly and evenly for a more romantic, effortless look.

The Final Look

Add a vintage-inspired turban headband like this one from Eugenia Kim to complete the look. Be sure to apply sunscreen allover face and forehead, in case the turban moves slightly throughout the day!

Style It With

Balance out the statement-making turban headband and beautiful side braid with clean black and white pieces for a day at the beach. Add a little bit of color or pattern with a fun sandal.
