Apart from her acting chops, Jessica Chastain’s cayenne-red strands also seem to be a huge part of her identity. Her head-turning fiery locks may make her stand out from the crowd, but she revealed she hasn’t always believed that was a good thing. In a recent interview, Jessica admitted that, in her younger days, she didn’t necessarily like standing out in a sea of blonde and brunette manes. We totally get it, as feeling like an outcast at a young age can be detrimental to your self-esteem.

However, now that she’s older, she’s learned to appreciate her natural color and tries to avoid dyeing it. If she does ever reach for hair color, it’s due to an acting commitment that doesn’t have any room for wigs. Speaking of wigs, she prefers them because they can change your whole look—temporarily—for the sake of being on set. She adds that a good wig can really help her settle into a character. It’s refreshing to see her embrace her natural features and actually celebrate what makes her different.
